Contents
Background
The Boy lived in an unnamed village deep within the tundra. Five years prior to the beginning of the story, most of the people of his village had departed in search of the land beyond the mountain range, a paradise said to be filled with warmth, food aplenty, and happiness.
He had tried to follow them, but was stopped by Joaan, and the migrating villagers told him to stay and care for his grandparents, with the promise that they’d one day return to bring them all as well. However, sometime during the five year period, the boy’s grandparents died and he was left alone with Joaan.
Appearance
The Nameless Boy was a young teen with short white hair and light purple eyes. He usually wore a brown hooded fur cloak, a light tan shirt, dull green pants, and fur laden boots.
Personality
The Nameless Boy was a cheerful and optimistic individual, who had faced each day with a smile and a hope that never wavered, even under the cold and isolated conditions of his arctic home. When faced with disappointment, he would always look towards the bright side, and he cared very much for Joann and the people of his village, taking responsibility of caring for his grandparents until their passing as well as his pet wolf.
He was also incredibly determined. Having dreamt of the paradise beyond the mountain for so long, he had pushed himself through the icy tundra, a debilitating leg injury, and a waning food supply all in hopes that he would reach it.
His optimism did have its limits. After discovering the remains of his village’s expedition, he broke down in despair, unable to lie to himself about the harsh reality. He eventually managed to come to terms with his situation and, knowing that he’d done all he could, passed away with a smile on his face.

Background
March was born in the village of Ninannah to an unnamed mother and father. Years later, she is chosen as a sacrifice for Oniguma but is rescued by Parona.
Appearance
March is a young girl with long black hair and brown eyes. Per Ninannah customs for young children, March sports dark face paint in her village. She wears a headband, a light brown dress, and is usually seen carrying around a toy crab.
Personality
March is shown to be playful, inquisitive, and highly excitable. Her deepest wish is to become a mother- March often displays childish impatience at the thought of achieving adulthood.
March holds manners, or at least mannerisms taught to her by her parents, in high regard. She becomes frustrated when first meeting and seemingly being ignored by Fushi, who was incapable of speech at the time. March is also eager to repay gifts or acts of kindness with her own gifts, such as «thank you» meals when Parona presents newly made dolls.
March believes taking a life, and by extension, taking advantage of a life, is deepy immoral. Her outburst in the Yanome dungeons is enough to prevent Parona from carving apart Oniguma’s corpse to end the Ninnnah sacrificial tradition. In modern day Yanome, The Guardian Nokker claims March inspired it to stop outright killing humans.
Skills
March is very skilled at climbing trees. She’s also small enough where she can easily crawl through tight spaces adults can’t.

Appearance
Tonari is a young girl about 14 years old. She has short brown hair, green eyes, and tan skin. She wears a light blue jacket and shorts, a black and white shirt, and is often seen with her pet owl, Ricard. She also has a triangle carved in the palm of her right hand.
Personality
Tonari is clever, cunning, and appears to be a bit manipulative. She has a great love for reading and writing.
Tonari is introspective, keenly aware of her own attitudes and feelings. Tonari admits to Fushi that she believes guilty prisoners deserved to be killed, a belief that prevents even murder from upsetting her. She questions whether this belief will allow her to assimilate in the outside world.
She displays a deep sense loyalty to those she considers her friends, and is willing to go back to Jananda to rescue Fushi despite finally being able to leave the island. Eventually, Tonari extends her sense of duty to the entire island, opting to stay on Jananda to rebuild and reform its society.
Background
Tonari grew up on an unnamed island with her father, Erran G. Dalton, and an unnamed mother. When she was 7 years old, she awoke one morning to find her mother lying dead on the floor. The Church condemned her father as the killer and sent him to the island of Jananda. The Church gave Tonari a choice to either stay on her home island as an orphan or follow her father into exile. She decided to follow him because she believed her father to be innocent.
On Jananda, the prisoners and their exiled families discarded their humanity, creating a new culture that recognized every freedom imaginable, including murder.
After an unknown time, Tonari’s father decided to enter a tournament that, if he won, would give him the power to leave the island. Tonari begged her father not to participate, but he ignored her pleas and told her to go to Ivo Port at the end of the tournament.
In the end, Tonari didn’t recognize the victor as her father and believed him to be dead. She searched for his corpse for several days until she found a book at Ivo Port. In the book was a note addressed to her from her father that read, «Happy birthday! With this book, weave together your dreams.» Her father ended up being murdered by other residents for killing the previous victor.
However, it is later revealed that Tonari only believed her father to be innocent in the beginning. After watching him fight and enjoy himself in the tournament, she began to suspect that he really did kill her mother. From then on, Tonari believed her father and everyone else on the island was murderous scum,
When she was nine years old, she met Mia, Uroy, Sandel and Oopa.
Skills
When there is trouble, Tonari’s group often looks to her for guidance. She seems to be well-liked by the group.
Tonari appears to be very well-read, pointing out to Sander that if they pulled the spear out of Mia’s abdomen, she would bleed out and die.
Over the past 40 years, Tonari has ingested several different types of poison and has built up a resistance to them.
Mizuha
| Spoiler Alert! This article, Mizuha, does contain spoilers! Do not proceed unless you wish to be spoiled. |
At the start of the Modern Era Arc, she was an eighth grader.
Contents
Background
Mizuha comes from a rather well-off family, indicated by the size of the apartment in which she lives with her parents. Her mother, Izumi, is a writer and is very demanding, always pushing her daughter to be the best at something while often forgetting about her successes. This means that Mizuha has close to no free time at all.
Her grandfather later reveals that she is destined to be the 18th leader of The Guardian Force founded by Hayase, but Mizuha never knew about this because her mother cut ties with him.
The only person that sees Mizuha as a friend (and the other way around) is a girl called Hanna. Many of Mizuha’s female peers are jealous of her because many third years (and generally attractive guys) fall for her. Mizuha has always rejected their advances, but is accused of «stealing» them from others.
Appearance
Mizuha is a girl with a slender build and long, black hair. Most of the time, she wears a black hair tie with a feather attached to it. She says it’s her favorite.
Personality
At first glance, Mizuha is a gentle and rather reserved girl.
In reality, however, she has been raised to see herself as perfect and everyone else as imperfect. She doesn’t understand why the people around her have trouble with the things she finds to be easy and looks down on them. Her desire to be perfect is strong enough to make her want to end her life before becoming an adult, thus preventing her body from becoming imperfect with age.
After she learns of the history of her family and Fushi, she is determined to «obtain» him and become «truly perfect». [1] This sudden, newfound goal ostensibly provides Mizuha a more positive outlook on her life, causing her to become more accepting with her «imperfect» family and friends.
Skills
Mizuha has had many «hobbies» in her life, from playing the piano to dancing ballet and being in the naginata club. The naginata is a traditional Japanese blade as well as the blade Hayase and her successors have used, and being in a club with the same name probably means that she can handle the weapon. On top of that, she has only ever quit these hobbies or clubs after winning an important tournament.
While Mizuha is a slim and feminine girl, she also seems to possess a certain amount of strength. For example, she can carry a tower of books with no visible issues concerning weight and balance. Another time she’s carrying several bags to a trash container. She throws the bags up high, around two times her own height, and thus they land atop the other bags in the container. Again, she does this without any visible trouble.
